Prof Dr Eckhard Goepel, Consultant for Gynaecology at the Breast Centre Hamburg at the Jerusalem Hospital

Does genetic testing make sense and what do you recommend in case of an increased risk for breast cancer?

Professor Goepel:

We have oncological tumour boards every week in which the human geneticists also take part. There, we decide whether genetic testing makes sense. This may for instance be the case for younger women in whose families there have been cases of breast cancer. After testing, our recommendation is decided for each individual case. If the relevant gene is detected, it does not always mean that a complete mastectomy is necessary. More frequent and thorough check-ups are also an option.
